A grounded approach to dog walking

I bring together a genuine love for dogs and local knowledge of Wellington’s best walking spots, to give your dog the movement, attention and adventure they deserve.

About

Kia ora, I'm Jake - your local dog walker here in Wellington. I run small-group pack walks built around adventure, engagement, calm guidance and movement. Based out of Brooklyn and the surrounding suburbs, we spend a lot of time out on the hills, tracks, and coastal spots where dogs can really stretch their legs and enjoy themselves. Whether it's a steady wander through the bush or a more open run, the focus stays the same - keeping things relaxed, safe, and enjoyable for every dog in the group. I genuinely care for each dog like they're my own, and put everything into making sure your pooch comes home exercised, socialised and fulfilled.

My approach

At the core of what I do is the Jentle Method, adapted for an urban setting, with a strong focus on calm guidance, trust-building, and positive reinforcement. Rather than relying on pressure or constant correction, it's about helping dogs make better choices through connection, clear communication, consistency, and well-timed guidance. It suits the kind of real-world walking I offer - where dogs are moving through changing environments, reading each other, responding to their handler, and learning to stay settled around everyday distractions. A big part of it is building trust and the behavioural framework gradually, letting dogs engage with their surroundings, and giving them the space to enjoy the walk and just be themselves.

Experience

From as early as I can remember, I've been surrounded by dogs. I've always connected with their energy, their honesty, and the simple way they experience the world. Over the years I've owned three German Shepherds and spent a lot of time fostering, training, and caring for all sorts of breeds and temperaments for clients, friends, and family. Some of the most rewarding experiences have been working with rescue dogs, or pooches who've had a rough start for one reason or another. Watching a dog slowly relax, build trust, gain confidence, and start properly enjoying life again is genuinely one of the best parts of what I do. Those experiences, along with a broad mix of training methods and philosophies, have shaped a grounded, practical approach to working with dogs - and given me a solid understanding of what dogs actually need to feel balanced, fulfilled, safe, and genuinely happy, both on their own and within a pack.

The philosophy of the micro-pack

Smaller packs lead to safer, more positive outcomes all around. By keeping my groups strictly limited to a maximum of six dogs, I can observe dynamics more clearly, respond earlier, and give each dog more meaningful attention and situational training if needed. This structure creates a calmer, more predictable environment where trust, bonds, and good social behaviour can develop naturally over time. That consistency and balance make a noticeable difference - not just during the adventure, but in how beautifully your dog settles at home on the couch.

My weekly schedule and focus

My weekly schedule's built around giving dogs more than just a standard walk round the block. Each outing has purpose behind it - proper time to move, practise calm responses, build confidence around real-world distractions, and enjoy good social interaction without being rushed or overwhelmed. Where it's appropriate, one of the goals is to gradually work toward confident off-leash handling, by building trust, responsiveness, and good decision-making over time. Given the chance to move, explore, sniff, play, and engage with the world, dogs settle and learn naturally.
